IRS Exposes 120,000 Individuals' Names and Contact Inforamtion

On or about August 26, 2022, the IRS discovered that information about approximately 120,000 individuals was posted on its website. This information came primarily from non-profit organizations that file form 990-T tax returns.

Non-profit organizations routinely make their information public, but individual information is kept private. Once the IRS was made aware of the error, they immediately removed the information from the website and are in the process of contacting the individuals over the next several weeks.

According to the Treasury Department, no social security numbers or income information was exposed. However, names and contact information were included in the mistaken disclosure.

Although the error was discovered on the 26th of August, there is no information specifying how long the disclosed information was available to the general public.
